Half Day, Full Day and Overnight Instructional Experiences

FAQs

How many miles will we hike?

Our hiking mileage is overall determined by the clients and the booked trip. Our half-day hikes may cover as little as 1-5 miles depending on the route and experience chosen. Our guides are happy to plan trips with up to 15-20 miles per day for those looking for an experienced, mileage focused hiking experience. Our expert guides will overall make decisions to prioritize the safety of those on the trip and may limit mileage upon an assessment of clients abilities.

Do I need to bring my own gear/equipment?

Our guides hike with a daypack full of the necessary essential items such as: GPS and communication device, first aid and emergency kit, headlamp, and water filter. Our clients are encourage to pack their own rain gear if needed and water bottles. Other items that we encourage are extra layers if the season requires it and sunscreen for those who need it. Appropriate foot wear is required and trekking poles can be provided upon request. Class and course supplies are provided depending on the experience booked.

Do I need to pack my own meals and snacks?

We encourage hikers to show up with adequate nutritional fuel for the hike planned. Snacks are encouraged and full packed lunches are required for full-day hikes. Travelling for extended periods of time in the backcountry requires an appropriate amount of food and water to ensure safety. Our expert guides are happy to make suggestions for snacks and packed lunches prior to your trip upon request.

What if it rains?

Rain is a common part of mountain life in western North Carolina. We plan our trips to be rain or shine as long as the forecasted weather does not pose a serious safety concern. Our experienced guides have many rainy miles recorded in their personal experiences and are happy to coach along the hike on ways to stay safe and as comfortable as possible during rainy conditions. In the event that rain poses a safety risk, we may offer a refund or an opportunity to reschedule your trip. If the forecast predicts rain that does not pose a safety risk, we are still happy to reschedule but cancelled bookings may be subject to our cancellation policy.
